Multicultural Student Affairs

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs advances 澳门六合彩历史记录鈥檚 commitment to diversity by providing support services to enable multicultural students to make a smooth transition to campus life and engage in meaningful activities to promote their intellectual, social, emotional and professional development.

Programs and Services

We promote success for multicultural students through pre-college programs,聽academic services and support,聽collaboration with faculty, staff and leadership聽and various other services at the University.

Academic Excellence Workshops

Academic Excellence Workshops provide advanced group-learning techniques for technical subject mastery which incorporates problem sets that expand student capabilities beyond the normal curriculum. The workshops are a聽disciplined learning environment (versus a teaching environment) in which students demonstrate subject mastery to peers and learn test-taking skills. The workshops help develop communication skills regarding technical issues and the ability to work effectively in groups.

Academic Excellence Workshops are success oriented and aimed at high grades and no failing grades. Its supplemental learning experience is closely related to a specific technical course.

Academic Excellence Workshop Goals

  • Build an academic community among students, facilitators and faculty
  • Obtain a more complete mastery of material
  • Enhance technical communications skills
  • Increase ability to work as a team member

King-Chavez-Parks (KCP) Initiatives

The King-Chavez-Parks (KCP) Initiative Select Student Support Service (4-S) component established by聽the Michigan Legislature in 1986, the program goal is to increase the graduation rate of admitted聽Michigan residents who are academically and/or economically disadvantaged at point of admittance or聽during the matriculation process.

Eligibility Requirements
In order to receive services from KCP, students must be academically disadvantaged and/or economically disadvantaged.

Academically Disadvantaged Requirements

Incoming Freshmen

  • ACT Composite Score < 24
  • SAT Math Score < 600
  • Math Placement Score聽< 70%

Continuing Students (Freshmen 2)

  • On Academic Warning/Probation

Economically Disadvantaged Requirements

  • Pell eligible based on the FAFSA

Maximizing Academic Growth in College

Maximizing Academic Growth in College (MAGIC) is聽part of the freshman orientation program focusing on聽academic success strategies. A significant segment is devoted to the benefits of collaborative learning and group study.聽Topics introduced include setting personal goals, seeking help from peers and professors, campus resources, time management, roommate issues, developing study skills and test taking. Personal development focuses on helping students realize their personal growth and development are dependent on obtaining a good understanding of themselves. Issues covered include academic and social motivation, general coping skills and being receptive to support services.
