A blend of academic and real-world experiences, this is a STEM program like no other in the state of Michigan, the nation, or the world.

The academic portion of the experiential program features small class sizes and an emphasis on developing your ability to analyze operational requirements. Here you will learn how to design processes that systematically integrate customer needs, technology and economic and social factors for industrial, service and governmental organizations.

Courses you would be taking include a broad range, such as lean manufacturing and production systems, work design, intelligent manufacturing, supply chain management, ergonomics and human factors, quality control, and statistics/analytics and mathematical optimization.

Many of the courses include a strong laboratory experience, which both enhances students鈥 learning and hones their abilities to apply technology effectively in the workplace. Classroom instruction is backed by hands-on application in well-equipped laboratory facilities including Applied Control Systems and Robotics, Work Design, Human Factors (Ergonomics), Interdisciplinary Design and Manufacturing, and Statistical and Simulation Modeling.

In the hands-on, Co-op program, you will have much more than an internship. You will work with an industry partner 鈥 like UPS, GM, Ford, FCA, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Walmart, Light Guide Systems, DTE Energy, Yanfeng or government agencies and contractors 鈥 where you can apply what you鈥檝e learned in the classroom and add more high-demand, professional skills.

The Industrial Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, . Enrollment in the program includes about 80 undergraduates with one to two dozen earning a BS IE each year. Each graduate will have attained a rigorous list of skills and abilities preparing them for careers in many related fields.

Industrial engineers devise efficient systems that integrate people, machines, materials, information, and energy to make a product or provide a service.

Job growth is projected to be 10 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median annual wage for industrial engineers was $88,020 in May 2019.
